Hops
have been grown at Hartley Park Farm since the
1700's until a change in the brewing industry.
In response, Tim and Anne Butler converted the use of the farmland
across to growing lavender and rosemary in 2001. To maintain the
family tradition, they have kept two acres of hop bines growing
on the farm, which are now widely used for decoration.
The
three varieties of hops grown at Hartley Park Farm are Northdown,
Challenger and Phoenix. The hop bines are harvested once a year
and are selected and cut by hand by the Butler family. The hops
are cut and sold green when they are pliable, and they dry naturally
at room temperature after a period of time and gradually turn a
blaze of golden peach.
They
are a stunning and unusual decoration used for marquees, churches,
weddings, parties, interior home décor, functions and in
pubs where hops are reputed to help cleanse the air.
Hops
are sold green from mid August to the end of September. Orders can
be taken by phone 01420 511204 and by email.
